Current News

Several of the members of the current performance squad were selected to represent Somerset at the Inter County in September 2017. They will be part of the Somerset team which competed against other county teams which make up the GWAS region.

Recurve: Hannah Cole and Luke Davey

Compound: Michael Wood

The county team has been selected on a basis of hard work, success in external events and a desire to achieve. All those selected have shown this in abundance and is reward for their continuing hard work.

Several positions are still open for selection and any junior who is interested should speak to Paul.

There will be an element of selection and he will need to see scores submitted over the last few weeks. It would also be ideal if those with a desire to attain county status this year were to consider competing in the County Championships. Not a pre requisite but would be good as part of the archers build up to the county shoot in September.

Those wishing to try this will be welcome to train with the performance team over the next few weeks in preparation, BUT it is expected you will be able to train a couple of times per week and undertake some training at home to support this.

Those already selected have shot at the national championships and several other shoots in preparation for the county events.

Performance Squad – Explained

This year several junior archers were selected to join in with the new performance squad set up at GVA. This was to give athletes access to a dedicated programme with support from coaches and sports specialists to assist them in their archery. Several of these athletes have now been rewarded with a chance to join the elite Archery GB talent programme.

The GVA squad train twice a week and this can be normal shooting right back to basics using training bands and light weight bows. There is also an element of strength and conditioning. In addition to this they are expected to train at home on fitness and some for the drills which are taught, all the while keeping a log book of their activities.

If this is something you are interested in you will need to be able to train regular twice a week all year.

As well as this it will be expected that you will enter several competitions including the nationals (indoor and outdoor) and for Recurve archers, there is the possibility of being selected for the Archery GB talent pool in July.

Also many of the following will be useful:

Desire, commitment, willingness to train, able to listen, have the support of parents, able to train on your own initiative and as part of a group

Selection is not down to scores but more a desire to be the best you can.

Many who engage in the programme have gone on to record personal bests at completion and in classifications. A full list will be posted soon.

All those who started this can be extremely proud of the success achieved so far this year and also in helping the club attain the performance Specialism from ArcheryGB’s on-target programme.

Selection for the squad is open in July/August as those successful will have a new individual plan drawn up.
